The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Trail Enforcement deputies will begin flotation inspections the first week in December.  Dane County Ordinance Chapter 71 requires certain motorized vehicles operated on lakes within Dane County to be equipped with flotation. All vehicles requiring flotation and/or a permit must be inspected.

Inspections are held at the Dane County Parks Operations office located at 4318 Robertson Road in Madison.  There is a $10.00 inspection fee payable by cash or check at the time of inspection.  A photo ID is required.

Requirements for lakes Mendota, Monona and Wingra are:

  • Vehicles weighing over 850 lbs. require a special use permit.
  • Vehicles weighing less than 850 lbs. require flotation and a permit.

All other Dane County lakes:

  • Vehicles weighing over 850 lbs. require a special use permit.
  • Vehicles between 750-850 lbs. require flotation and a permit.
  • Vehicles under 750 lbs. have no restrictions.

In general, inspections will take place on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  These times start December 4thand run through February 7th.  For more detailed information go to www.danesheriff.comand click on the Float Inspection Information link under “News and Noteworthy.” Deputies suggest completing the permit form prior to arrival to make the process more efficient.
