Our Community Deputies are your trusty Swiss Army knives of law enforcement, juggling a wide variety of responsibilities! They are the superheroes of car seat inspections; the champions of bike safety; the defenders of school safety, and the warriors of summer programs.
Need safety education presentations or first aid tips? They've got you covered!
They are also on the front lines of crime prevention, concentrated enforcement, elder abuse, and alcohol and drug abuse issues. Plus, they throw a mean National Night Out party!
With a multi-disciplinary flair, our Community Deputies team up with all sorts of other agencies to make sure our community gets top-notch service. They pride themselves on working alongside townships, municipalities, nonprofits, and community organizations.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office provides free firearm safety kits to local residents through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gun lock, are available from our Community Deputies, at all three DCSO precincts, the Public Safety Building, and the Dane County Law Enforcement Training Center. The locks fit most types of handguns, rifles, and shotguns. We encourage residents to pick up a gun safety kit so that they can securely store their firearms. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm.
If you would like to arrange for pick up of a gun lock, please email our Community Deputies
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office also provides free prescription medication lock boxes to local residents. We encourage residents to use a locked medication box to securely store medication out of reach of pets and children. Locked medication boxes can help prevent accidental consumption and help stop the spread of substance misuse in our community.
If you would like to arrange for pick up of a locked medication box, please email our Community Deputies
Our fabulous Community Deputies whip up events all year long and are on the lookout for awesome volunteers! If you’re ready to jump in and lend a hand, shoot them an email at DCSO Community Deputies
