The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce its partnership with the nationally recognized Public Safety Cadets Program (PSC), a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing young adults for a possible career with leadership roles in the Public Safety Profession. Dane County Sheriff’s Office has created Cadet Post #1839 which is open to young adults between the ages 14 and 20 who have interest in public safety with a focus on law enforcement. The goal of the program is to introduce and lead our youth in learning about a career in law enforcement through the teaching of the 5 C’s: Character, Competence, Compassion, Courage and Communication.
The Cadet Program provides area youths with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of law enforcement, through hands on training, and education on a variety of law enforcement related topics. The Cadet would have opportunities to serve their communities by assisting deputies with community events, fund-raising, training exercises and other sheriff’s office related community functions. Once a Cadet has shown their competencies in the field of law enforcement they may participate in a completion where they can demonstrate those specific skills both locally, at the state level and even the national level. Upon receiving proper training a Cadet can request to be assigned to ride with a deputy as they patrol Dane County.
Dane County Sheriff’s Office employees and deputies who have been trained in the Cadet Program will mentor, coach and train the skills needed for a successful career in the law enforcement field with Character, Competence, Compassion, Courage and Communication.
If you are between the ages of 14 and 20 years of age, have completed 8th grade, have a GPA of 2.0 and no felony convictions you could be a Dane County Sheriff’s Office Cadet. If you are interested in learning about a possible career in law enforcement or just curious about the job apply below. The Cadet program introduces young adults (ages 14 to 20) to the field of law enforcement and gives them a better understanding of this as a possible career choice. This program fosters responsibility in the members and gives them motivation to do well in school as well as become active with in the community through volunteering. The group provides a positive place for our young adults to grow and socialize.
Our meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month during the school year from 5:45 pm until 9 pm at the Dane County Sheriff’s Office located at 15o West Doty St. Madison Wisconsin 54703. The meeting is overseen by a Dane County Sheriff’s Office Mentor with the assistance of a cadet who has been selected into a command position. The first part of the meeting handles everyday business, financing, events and organizational topics.
The second part of the meeting with focus on specific training topics such as professional communications, ethics, traffic stops, firearms and many other aspects of law enforcement and corrections. These training topics will include: Cadet participation, hands on exercises and proficiency exams. Cadets will be asked to role play and critique their fellow Cadets all while being supervised by a Mentor.
The training and experience will eventually be put on display in front of other Cadets, law enforcement professionals as they complete in local, state and national competition. These skills will help mold the Cadet with a focus on a career in Law Enforcement.
Community involvement is expected out of every Cadet. Possible involvement may include assisting at county events such as parades, festival, training events or the county fair. The Cadets will constantly look for opportunities to get out into the community and make it a better place through volunteering. The training and activities give exposure to the Cadets so that they understand what a career in law enforcement or corrections would be while giving back to their community.
There is no upfront cost or fees associated with the program. The Cadet will however have to have black shoes and purchase a pair of black BDU style pants and a name tag. All of the other equipment: polo shirts, dress uniform shirts, uniform belt and police gear will be provided to the Cadet. The Cadets will have the opportunity to raise funds in the community through specially organized events in order to cover the cost of competing and associated travel.
