On Friday, August 15th, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office conducted a four-hour seatbelt grant deployment, which resulted in over 100 citations.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) has been working with law enforcement to increase seatbelt usage in an effort to reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities that in motor vehicle crashes.  The Dane County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $10,000 in grant money to conduct seatbelt enforcement during 2014.

Friday’s enforcement took place at two intersections, U.S. Highway 51 and CTH V in the town of Burke, and STH 19 and Lake Road in the town of Windsor.  Of the 101 traffic citations that were issued during the deployment, 74 were for no seatbelt.

Wisconsin continues to lag behind the national average for seatbelt usage of 86 percent.  By increasing our current usage by just 10 percent, WI DOT estimates we would save 44 lives each year.
