On May 29, 2013 the Dane County Sheriff’s Office received information alleging Deputy Sheriff Jeffrey Hilgers was involved in an intimate relationship with a female inmate who was at the time on the sheriff’s electronic monitoring program.

Immediately after receiving the information alleging the relationship, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation which confirmed the relationship between Jeffrey Hilgers and the inmate. It was learned during the investigation that the inmate was previously housed in a jail housing unit managed by Jeffrey Hilgers. After the inmate was placed on electronic monitoring they made contact at a grocery store and began a relationship including a sexual relationship which is contrary to Wisconsin Statute.

While examining Jeffrey Hilgers’ computer per a search warrant, images were located that were believed to be a violation of Wisconsin Statute. Another search warrant was obtained and the computer was analyzed for additional images.

Charges were referred to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office for the violations found during the investigation. Sheriff Mahoney is pleased that Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne has issued the charges against Jeffrey Hilgers. Sheriff Mahoney believes that when a Deputy inappropriately uses their position as a Deputy Sheriff they will be held accountable for their actions.

As part of the due process Jeffrey Hilgers was scheduled to attend an administrative hearing on August 14, 2013. Deputy Hilgers submitted his resignation to Sheriff Mahoney prior to the administrative hearing.
