Madison, WI – At 4:00 p.m. Dane County deputies responded to an inmate of the Dane County Jail City – County Building attempting to commit suicide.

While conducting a routine count and security check, an inmate failed to respond when deputies called for him to stand at his cell door.  Deputies entered the cellblock and immediately went to the inmate’s cell.  The inmate had a sheet around his neck and was attempting to strangle himself with it.  It appeared the inmate was not breathing.  Deputies entered the cell and removed the ligature from his neck.  Once the sheet was removed, the inmate began breathing on his own without the need for resuscitation.  Medical Staff also responded to the incident.

The 20 year old man, from Madison, is being held in the Dane County Jail on charges of battery, criminal damage to property, and a probation violation.

The inmate was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and returned to the jail. He was moved to an area of the Dane County Jail where he could be more closely monitored and was placed on suicide watch.
