In just a matter of weeks, boaters will replace the ice fishermen you now see on Dane County lakes. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging boaters, both old and new, to attend a boating safety class. While the minimum age to attend is 10, it is highly recommended that students are closer to 12 years of age or older. The cost for the course is only $10.00, which is due at the first class. Graduates will receive a DNR boating safety certificate valid once the graduate is 12 years of age. The course will be offered in McFarland starting March 15th. Cambridge and Stoughton will be the locations for the April classes, and in May and June, classes will be offered in Sun Prairie and Verona. For a complete schedule log on to www.danesheriff.com or www.dnr.state.wi.us. Registration is required prior to class and limited seating is available. The registration form is also available online at the websites listed above. Every year, the number of recreational boaters using Wisconsin lakes grows. In 2008, 20 people died in boating accidents in the state of Wisconsin. Take the steps to ensure you and your family is educated on boater safety. ###
