The annual tradition of “Books and Bears” will continue this year at the Dane County Jail. For over 10 years, Deputy Darlynn Brown has organized the project to help make the holiday season a little brighter for children who may have the unfortunate experience of visiting a loved one in jail. Every year, thousands of people come through visitation at the Dane County Jail. Many of these visitors are children coming to see their parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. The “Books and Bears” program gives these children a positive experience with a law enforcement officer, something they may not have experienced in the past. Starting tomorrow through New Year’s Day, children who come to jail visitation will receive a new book and a new stuffed animal. All of the books and bears have been donated by local businesses or individuals. The Sheriff Office extends a special thank you to everyone who donated. Without these donations, the program would not be possible. ###
