Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies made 11 OWI arrests over the weekend. For 7 drivers it was their 1st Offense, while 2 drivers were cited for their 2nd Offense, and 2 for their 3rd Offense of Operating While Intoxicated. Snow and ice covered roads made driving hazardous in general over the weekend. In several instances, drivers were arrested for OWI after they lost control of their vehicle and became stuck in a ditch. At least three arrests were preceded by crashes. Fortunately, none of the crashes resulted in serious injury or death. One of the 3rd Offense drunk drivers, a 45-year-old man from Monticello, was arrested after he fell asleep in the middle of Morehead Drive in the town of Montrose. On Friday night, a 37-year-old man was arrested in the town of Albion. When his responsible party came to pick him up, he and his passenger were also found to be intoxicated. The driver was cited for absolute sobriety, while his passenger was cited for an underage alcohol violation. Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted Cottage Grove Police during an OWI arrest on CTH N Saturday night, where the passenger of the vehicle began to fight with the Cottage Gove Police Officer. The Cottage Grove Officer subsequently tased the passenger. Both parties were transported to the Dane County Jail. Sheriff’s Deputies also assisted McFarland Police on Saturday night. While a McFarland Officer was assisting a motorist on USH 51 and Sigglekow Road, another motorists struck the officer’s squad car. The driver of the offending vehicle, a 24-year-old man from McFarland, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He was cited for Too Fast For Conditions. The squad car was unoccupied at the time, and the officer was not injured in the incident. The “Move Over” law exists in Wisconsin to protect all emergency responders and drivers from this type of crash. Please remember to “Move Over” or slow down when passing emergency responders on the side of the road. ###
