On Thursday, October 16, Deputies from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office worked with law enforcement agencies across the country to arrest persons with outstanding family violence warrants. In Dane County, a total of 12 warrants were served and 11 people were apprehended. This marks the 6th year the Family Violence Apprehension Detail has been coordinated nation-wide by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon. It is the 2nd consecutive year the Dane County Sheriff’s Office has been one of over 150 departments to participate. Agencies served outstanding arrest warrants with charges ranging from Harassment to Homicide. In Dane County, the majority of warrants were for nonsupport. There were also three arrests for Domestic Disorderly Conduct, one Battery, and two people were found in violation of the Sex Offender Registry. Ultimately, this collaborative effort hopes to raise awareness about the problem of domestic violence and demonstrate that this social problem is important to law enforcement and communities. It also demonstrates to offenders that they will be held accountable for their actions. In addition to this one-day event, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office works continuously to combat domestic violence in our community. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, nearly one-third of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives. In a survey of more than 6,000 American families, fifty percent of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently abused their children. ###
