Due to the rain, the press conference will be held in the first floor atrium of the WI Trade Center Building, 8401 Greenway Blvd. Madison, WI. June 5th, 2008 – As part of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office ongoing effort to improve traffic safety on the beltline and throughout Dane County, Sheriff David Mahoney is announcing the 2nd annual “Drive Smart” campaign. Sheriff Mahoney, along with representatives from The Department of Transportation, Town of Madison Police, Middleton Police, Monona Police, Cottage Grove Police, and the City of Madison Police Department, will hold a press conference announcing this enforcement campaign on Thursday, June 5th at 1:30 PM in First Floor Atrium of the WI Trade Center Building (8401 Greenway Blvd.). The Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety, has awarded the Dane County Sheriff’s Office a $50,000 grant to provide overtime enforcement on Highway 12/18 between Cottage Grove and Middleton. The specialized enforcement will focus primarily on keeping drunk drivers off the road, however all traffic laws will be strictly enforced. Last year during the “Drive SMART” campaign, officers handed out a total of 1105 citations and warnings. In doing so, they also made 9 felony arrests and 17 drug related arrests. The program will run from June through September, and participating agencies will be patrolling at all hours of the day or night, seven days a week. The first deployment is scheduled for Saturday June 7th. SMART stands for Sober, Moderate Speed, Alert, Restrained and Thoughtful.
