Drive SMART Week One

Saturday, June 7th marked the first deployment of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Drive SMART program on Highway 12/18 between Cottage Grove and Middleton. The week resulted in over 77 citations written to drivers on the beltline highway. Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies and police officers from several jurisdictions along the beltline handed out forty-two Speeding citations, six Seatbelt citations and one Child Restraint violation, one OWI arrest and one Open Intoxicants. Five drivers were cited for Operating After Revocation and six were cited for Operating After Suspension; for one driver it was the 4th Offense of OAS. Madison Police also made one drug related arrest and one warrant arrest. The overtime enforcement is made possible with a grant from the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety, and will operate through the summer months. Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies will have a presence on the beltline again this weekend, so please, Drive SMART…Sober, Moderate Speed, Alert, Restrained and Thoughtful. ###
