Madison, WI: March 10, 2008 At 9:52 pm, Dane County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the Sauk Prairie Hospital to meet with the victim of a shooting. Upon investigation, Deputies learned a 9-year-old had been accidentally shot in the lower left leg by her 12-year-old brother. The two siblings had been target shooting with a BB gun outside their residence, while supervised by their father, in the Town of Roxbury. The father had briefly left the two, and as the two children walked back to the residence, the 12-year-old slipped on some ice and accidentally pulled the trigger of the BB gun, striking his sister in the leg. The 9-year-old was treated for a minor wound at Sauk Prairie Hospital and released. The incident appears to be entirely accidental and no charges are pending. The Dane County Sheriff's Office reminds those handling firearms to do so with utmost care and caution. Always treat firearms as if they are loaded, and never point the muzzle in the direction of others. When carrying a firearm, always point the muzzle toward the ground, and never carry with your finger near the trigger.
