Sheriff's Office

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the schedule for 2008 boating safety classes. A new law past just last year requires a Wisconsin boating safety certification, or out of state equivalent certification, for operators born on or after January 1, 1989. Six boating safety classes are scheduled for 2008 throughout Dane County. The first class is being held in McFarland and begins February 24th. Prior registration is required, and a $10.00 fee is due on the first day of class. Minimum age to attend is 10, however it is recommended that students are close to 12 years of age or older. Graduates receive a DNR boating safety certificate valid once the graduate is 12 years of age. For a complete listing of classes and registration information, log on to www.danesheriff.com, and then click on Field Services/Marine and Trail Enforcement/boat safety class. In 2007, 18 water fatalities occurred in Wisconsin, and three drownings occurred in Dane County lakes. Register now for a boating safety class and make your summer on Wisconsin lakes a safe one. ###
