October 19, 2007. Madison, WI – Yesterday the Dane County Sheriff’s Office participated in the National Family Violence Apprehension Detail coordinated by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon. 27 deputies devoted their time to serving outstanding warrants related to domestic violence. Throughout the day and evening, 191 attempts were made to serve warrants. Out of those attempts, 9 people were arrested and taken into custody on 22 warrants. Many of the individuals sought were wanted on more than one warrant. Warrants were served on the following charges: · 1 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety · 1 Aggravated Battery Elderly · 1 Bail Jumping · 6 Battery · 1Aggravated Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm · 3 Criminal Damage to Property · 6 Disorderly Conducts · 1 OWI · 1 Prohibited BAC Despite the Sheriff’s Office commitment to this one-day apprehension detail, resources were stretched when deputies who had committed their shift to this effort were pulled to respond to other incidents happening in the county. At one point, one of the warrant suspects fled on foot abandoning his 5-year-old nephew with deputies in order to escape a misdemeanor battery charge. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and agencies throughout the United States recognize the urgency of this social problem. According to the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence, in 2005 Domestic Violence claimed 46 lives in Wisconsin. Victims reflected the span of life, from 6 months gestation to 88 years, and were from every region of the state, in 18 counties.
