A Waunakee man was taken into custody the afternoon of Friday, December 26th, following a multi-day investigation into domestic-related offenses in the Town of Westport.
The investigation began on Sunday, December 21st, when deputies responded to a residence on Kirkwood Drive after 38-year-old Harry McCormick allegedly threatened a woman with a handgun. The victim was able to escape the home before law enforcement arrived.
That night, and throughout the week, deputies attempted repeatedly to make contact with McCormick; however, he continued to avoid any communication with law enforcement.   Based on his continued refusal to cooperate, deputies drafted a search warrant, and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team (TRT) began preparing for a forced entry to the home.
At midday on Friday, December 26th, TRT members observed McCormick driving away from his residence as they approached the scene. He was stopped and taken into custody without incident. A loaded handgun was found under the passenger seat of the vehicle he was operating, and he showed signs of intoxication. Deputies also recovered multiple firearms from inside his home.
McCormick is currently being held in the Dane County Jail on tentative charges including:
•    2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety with a Weapon
•    Resisting/Obstructing an Officer
•    Threatening to Cause Great Bodily Harm
•    Disorderly Conduct
•    Mistreating an Animal Causing Death
•    Intoxicated Use of a Firearm
During the search of the residence, deputies also found a dead dog owned by the domestic violence victim. A necropsy is scheduled for next week at the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Clinic to determine the cause of the dog's death.
