During the first of three Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over deployments by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, six impaired drivers were arrested over a 12-hour period. A Sheriff’s deputy also received minor injuries when his squad was rear-ended as he assisted the WI State Patrol with an intoxicated driver. The first OWI followed a single-vehicle crash in the town of Medina at 2:35 p.m. on Friday, December 13th. The driver was not injured and was released after being cited for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)-1st offense. The crash involving the Sheriff’s deputy occurred just after 3:00 a.m. on December 14th on the off-ramp from I-90 to eastbound Highway 12 in the City of Madison. That driver fled the scene and has not been located. The deputy is recovering from his injuries. Another arrest followed a complaint of a driver following Fire and EMS responders in the Village of Deerfield. They described a white Cadillac SUV traveling at a high rate of speed and then attempting to pass the emergency responders three times on the same day. Timothy J. Hampton, age 42, of Madison, was arrested on a felony probation violation, along with OWI-2nd offense and Resisting/Obstructing. He is currently being held in the Dane County Jail on the probation violation. His passenger was also arrested on a warrant for Disorderly Conduct. The next deployment will occur on Friday, December 20th, in partnership with the City of Madison Police. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is a National campaign to combat impaired driving. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, in 2022, 281 people died in drunk driving-related crashes during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
