Critical Incident Investigation- Update

February 11, 2022
Captain Jan Tetzlaff
Sheriff's Office

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the Officer Involved Shooting, which occurred near the intersection of American Parkway and East Park Blvd. in the City of Madison last week.   The Sheriff’s Office is leading this investigation and is being assisted by investigators from the Sun Prairie Police Department.    All involved law enforcement, as well as Mr. Wilson have been cooperating with the Sheriff’s Office during this investigation.

On February 3, 2022, Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) agents were working collaboratively with federal agents and local officers to effectuate an arrest. In total there were twenty-one law enforcement officers involved in the arrest operation including thirteen agents from DCI, three DEA agents, three Madison Police Department officers, one Wisconsin State Patrol trooper and one WI DNR warden.   At this time we can confirm that of the twenty-one officers, only two DCI agents fired their weapons.    No agents or officers on the scene were wearing body-worn cameras.

Crime Scene investigators are still processing the evidence collected. Over the next several days, detectives will continue to interview involved parties and potential witnesses as well as review reports and all of the evidence collected to determine the facts of the incident.

Sheriff Kalvin Barrett remains committed to conducting a methodical, objective and transparent investigation.    The mission of our investigation is to determine the facts and report the truth.  We continue to ask for the community’s patience as we conduct our investigation.

Citizens who may have witnessed the incident or have video recordings are asked to call the Dane County tip line at (608) 284-6900.

Please continue to direct any media inquiries related to the incident to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.   We will release additional information when it is appropriate to share and it does not interfere with the integrity of the investigation.
