Without a safe facility in Dane County, the Sheriff’s Office began reallocating residents to other county jails in September of 2022. “A lack of safe and humane jail space, along with ongoing staffing shortages, has brought us to the difficult decision to place some of our jail residents in other counties. I will continue to advocate for a facility to be built in Dane County which reflects our community values,” said Sheriff Barrett.
The east section of the 7th floor of the City-County Building, which is the oldest area of the jail, was closed. Residents have been transferred to the Iowa County Jail. We will continue to reallocate residents until we either have adequate space and staff in our existing facility, or the new south tower is completed and operational.
